Hi, my dance name is Melita, but, I get to be Topaz when my hair is red. I also get referred to as the Costume Goddess by my friends & fellow dancers.
Many moons ago in the 70’s I took one bellydance class and then it disappeared from Billings. In the 90’s, I discovered bellydance again with Sonja Alarcon. Sonja was my first real teacher. All my basic & core bellydance skills & values, I can directly attribute to Sonja. (Thank You so much Sonja for being my first Teacher.) I have worked a lot of night jobs, so my attendance has always been sporadic. But, I have always came back to it when possible.
And, I keep coming back because of how it makes me feel about myself. I love to watch other dancers come in to our dance community and watch them grow in self- confidence . In general, most of us learn to be kinder to ourselves and others because of the growth of spirit we find in this dance form.
I am not a very dainty or prissy person. I like snaky moves and big, broad, & dynamic moves with dramatic delivery. I do like it when I can get my audience to feel the emotion I am dancing.
Most everyone in our bellydance area has a piece of costume that I had a hand in producing. They all look so good, like pretty flowers flowing past me in a stream. I always feel good about seeing my handy work gracing the dancers. See there !! a little bit of me just shimmied by!! Hoo hoo!!
What are my goals for the future? Well, at 60, I would like to dance like I did ten years ago. But, I hope to continue doing this for a few more years, because, it just feels so darn good.
